Traditionally at 21 you are given a key to the door. This is regarded as an end of a cycle as you have come of age.
In the case of the Velvetones sadly, 21 years signifies our retirement from the public stage. We were born in October 1998 with 8 initial members under the direction of Harry Hall. There have been many twists and turns over the years with no less than 6 Musical Directors.
We have entertained in theatres, restaurants, bars, private parties, social clubs, retirement homes, a wedding and even at Benidorm Palace. We can also claim to have sung on cruise ships, but only when they were in dock! We enjoyed combining with other local choirs to sing at the annual Christmas Carol service in Torrevieja.
In the 2005 LABBS (Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers) convention in Llandudno we competed as an international chorus. On another visit to the UK to attend the 2008 LABBS convention in Harrogate as spectators, we entertained fellow passengers on the outward plane journey. We have been involved with SABS (Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers) since its inception in 2009 attending conventions around Spain.
So many wonderful memories have been experienced over these years both at the sing outs and at our own private social functions and excursions. Lasting friendships have been made and will continue. There have been a number of countries from both hemispheres represented in our line up including Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Holland, Germany, South Africa, New Zealand and of course all corners of the UK.
With continuous support from our wonderful audiences, supporters, family and friends we have been able to generously donate funds to worthwhile charities throughout our area.
So it is with deep sadness we announce that we have taken our final curtain call. We thank everyone who has supported us over the years, your contribution and encouragement has been very much appreciated.
